Geocache Description:

Placed for the Missouri County Challenge, in New Madrid County, Swift Ditch Access is six miles South of Sikeston, MO.

Welcome to Swift Ditch Access

From I-55, take the Highway 80 exit east, then turn south on Highway V and go 1 mile, then turn left on gravel road 702 for 1/2-mile. The area is on the north side of the road.

Do NOT drive beyond the parking lot.

walk-in access only
You will be looking for an ammo box with log and SWAG.

Aquired by the MDC in 1997, Swift Ditch Access is an 146 acre wetland area with numerous small tree planting and shallow depressions that hold water during the winter season. There are 1.25 miles of frontage along St. Johns Bayou (Swift Ditch). Management of the area is directed toward protecting the watershed and providing a variety of tree, shrub and plant life, which in turn provides diversity for wildlife. While you're here, take a few minutes to look around. It's easy walking on the low levee tops north of the parking lot. It's common to see a variety of wildlife using the area.

Area activities include:

  • Bird Watching - Good population of species, although populations vary. Opportunity is very limited from parking lot. Walking through the area will provide the best results. Due to flooding access can be limited or not predictable.
  • Fishing - Bass, Catfish, Carp, Buffalo
  • Hunting - Deer: Hunting regulations for deer are by archery methods only.
  • Hunting - Waterfowl hunting is permitted, population varies, often limited. Flooding is limited to times of high water in Swift Ditch. Statewide regulations apply. Non-toxic shot only may be used.
  • Other - Small game hunting is sporadic. No single projectile firearms on the area. Statewide regulations apply.
Placed in cooperation with the MO Department of Conservation. Special Use Permit on file.
