How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Geocaching and 4x4s go together like peanut butter and jelly. Both are great fun, but both must be done in an environmentally aware manner. Tread Lightly® is a not-for-profit organization that works towards educating people in how to recreate in the great outdoors while causing minimum impact on the environment. That's why we put on our Geocaching event each year, to help spread the awarness of being cautious about the land you're caching on.

***The coords above take you to the boat launch at the campgrounds. After entering the campground, take the first left before the the water well and follow the road to the back corner of the camp. We are at campsite #1 ***

The TL event for this year is an action packed adventure weekend at the Maine Wilderness Camps on the shore of Pleasant Lake near Topsfield.

This will give you an oppourtunity to safely log the out of the way caches with a group. We will have a series of off road caches and a water cache.

We will have our Travel Bug/Geocaching chat along with our Tread Lightly presentation at noon on Saturday the 28th and then heading off from there in search of treasures and adventure!

This event will give you the opportunity to play in the mud and in the water! So bring your 4x4 and your kayak, come early and stay overnight!

We have a site reserved for 20 people. So please RSVP before July 20th. Staying overnight for this event will cost $3.75 per person. **The $3.75 is to pay for the campsite and goes to the campground, no profits are made off of this event** (Those not reserving or just wandering by can take their chances of getting an open site for $15 or by sleeping with the bears...)

Things to bring:
• A good attitude.
• Travels Bugs and Swag
• Trail capable 4x4 vehicle or kayak/canoe
• Overnight gear and supplies (tent, food, chair, flashlight, etc. You are responsible for yourself).
• 2 way radios are useful, if you don't have one, don't worry.
• Be prepared for the outdoors (bug spray *highly* recommended, there are toilet facilities nearby).
• Don't forget the GPS!

Goals for this event include:
• Demonstrating Geocaching and navigational software and hardware.
• Exchanging travel bugs.
• Safely logging those out of the way caches
• Sharing safe 4x4 driving skills and the Tread Lightly philosophy
• Passing on helpful information for finding caches in the backwoods.
• CITO if the opportunity arises.
• Having a safe/fun Geo-Weekend

To get to the Maine Wilderness Camps: From I-95 take Exit 227
Follow signs to Rt 6
Follow Rt 6 through Springfield About 10 miles from Springfield you will see a BIG sign for the Maine Wilderness Camps.
Turn Right there.
**From this point you are on active logging roads. Drive slow and stay alert. And stay in the middle of the road except when passing another vehicle, even though it looks dry it might not be, and getting a vehicle out of a sandy ditch isn't fun, trust me...**

Questions about the event?? join us on the forums at GEOCACHING MAINE to discuss the event.

** For those camping out overnight, we will have a pancake breakfast on sunday morning**
