By Land or by Sea Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

iTooth: It's been almost 4 years since the last find, so it's time to pull the plug, though this is a gorgeous area and a fun cache to find...via boat, that is! Therefore, cancelled due to lack of interest.

Geocache Description:

"There is another way in...a secret way"...Gollum (The Two Towers). And like Mordor, there are two ways to this cache, neither of which is very easy. The preferred way is by "sea"; however, you will need a shallow draft vessel (skiff-motor, or kayak/canoe for the more hearty). I have seen bald eagles, raccoons, salmon, coyotes, seals, swans, ducks, etc. in this beautiful marshland estuary.

For the water route: Turn onto Whalebone Way just E. of the Elk River Bridge, and follow Whalers St. to the end. After you launch your boat, park in the UPPER lot of the S. Bay Hunting Club (It's ok, I'm the secretary :) (~N46.51.763 W124.03.242). I recommend going on a calm day with incoming tide. Wear hip boots, as there can be shoals. You will see some white plastic jug channel markers on the way. Stay close to those on the way upriver. The cache is ~2.75 miles from the launch.

For land route: Despite that fact that the sign says the log road in is closed to motor vehicles, I have been assured by forest security that one may drive on this road, but do so ON WEEKENDS WHEN THE GATE IS OPEN. There are active logging operations going on here during the week. The cache is ~2.5 miles from where you park. Turn off Hwy 105 onto John's River Br. Road, then right on John's River Rd. Enter the Elk river A-Line near N46.52.895 W123.58.710 and follow the main road all the way. Park at the wide spot on the other side of the Elk River brige. You will see a primitive gated road off to the right that will lead the experienced cacher from there. The road gets more primitive nearer to the cache site, but is walkable all the way and biking-friendly most of the way. Bring the hint!

Be sure to go for the "Elk River Challenge" cache while doing this one, to make the most of your day. If you wish, email me and I can send you the waypt. coords for the land route, or give you advice on navigating up the Elk River estuary.
