Geocache Description:

A short but vigorous trip to a cache on the top of a hill on the outskirts of Durham. This will involve a fairly steep climb, so leave the bike but it’s not far from the parking coordinates and you can have a rest at the bottom when you get back. Okay for mature kids but watch out for the passable brambles and potential tumbles.

Here’s Shincliffe Park, a little wooded oasis nestling between the A177, B1198 and the A1(M). Nearby is The Rose Tree pub, whose doors I have never darkened but it’s been there forever so I imagine it’s ok, and further along the A177 is The Pump House restaurant that has remained similarly unpatronised. Houghall agricultural college is nearby and in the adjacent river it is often possible to see anglers standing in the middle of the Wear for reasons that escape me in the pursuit of aquatic creatures that escape them.

The cache is at an elevation of about 80 metres and the coordinates take you to about 85 metres so you need to do a bit of contouring. Or you could cheat. From the car parking at about 45 metres’ elevation, a footpath leads into the woods and the cache is a little way off to the side of the path – but up.

The cache has been changed so it’s now a large container and located in the same place: I wanted the other box for something else. Although I don’t think there’s a huge amount of traffic there, please make sure the box is concealed as best you can, ta.
