Up the Old Harcourt Road Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Geofellas: Given the conflicting opinions I have received on the private or otherwise nature of this trail it would seem judicious not to encourage cachers along here so as not to entice them into an area where they might get into a dispute with local landowners.

Regretfully, therefore, I am archiving this cache

Thanks to all who have sought and found (or not)

Geocache Description:

A regular cache in an area rich in trails suitable for hiking, ATVing and, in winter, snowmobiling.

The Old Harcourt Road, which was once a key through route in the pioneer days and possibly before that, is today a dirt trail and runs north of the village of Harcourt through an area of the Haliburton Highlands rich in forest, lakes, beaver dams and wildlife of all kinds. If you are going here during hunting season you would be well advised to wear bright orange to be sure you are not mistaken for a legitimate target. During the winter it is part of the Paudash Trailblazers Snowmobile trail system and, as such, part of the OFSC network so make sure you have the appropriate licences if you are traversing it by snowmobile.

The cache is hidden a short way up a side trail that runs off the main Old Harcourt Road towards a small lake that doesn't have a name on the topo maps of the area. It is an ammo box with a number of regular trading items and the June Bear TB as its initial contents. This side trail was a bit overgrown in July 2004 when we placed the cache.

If you are exploring the area by motorised transportation or on foot please make sure that you don't go further up the trail than 45°06.180'N, 78°10.163'W, the entrance to Harcourt Park, which is private land and well marked with appropriate signs. The only exceptions are if you are either a member of Harcourt Park or you are travelling the snowmobile trail that runs through Harcourt Park in the winter and have paid the appropriate OFSC fees.
