Just Frogs III - George's Adit Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Gecko: Due to extended out of town temporary assignment, I have not been able to verify whether legal access to the site is still possible. I believe the path and destination are both on on public land but apparently at least one nearby resident does not. To avoid any potential for future confrontations with that resident, I am archiving at Cache Reviewer's request. Thanks to everyone who visited in the past.

Geocache Description:

This 1/4-mile round trip two-stage cache is intended as an introduction to the historic Julian mining district. Located near the better-known Eagle/High Peak Mine, this short stroll along a forest trail leads to a free, self-guided tour of a gold mining equipment museum and the third in our Just Frogs cache series.

Former Confederate soldiers who came west from their homes in Georgia founded the town of Julian shortly after the Civil War. In 1869, black cattleman Fred Coleman discovered gold in a nearby creek, launching San Diego County’s only gold rush, a modest affair compared to the 1849 stampede. Although the local placer yields were limited and the rush over within a decade, a number of hard rock mines were claimed and worked to extract gold-bearing quartz veins that run nearly vertically through tilted metamorphic Julian schist common to this area of the Laguna Mountains. Today, Julian is a quiet country town known for the surrounding apple orchards. Fortunately, it also retains much of its pioneer look with numerous historic buildings still in use.

Parking for the cache is available at N 33 04.850, W 116 35.975. A last short section of dirt road leading to this parking is steep and rutted and may be difficult for some low clearance vehicles. Alternatively, it is a pleasant walk to reach the parking area from town.

DO NOT pull into the Eagle/High Peak Mine parking area unless you plan to pay about $8 per person to take their tour. Their highly informative 1 1/2 hour guided tour takes you through the main levels of two connecting mines and features original equipment displayed inside the mines and on the grounds and provides present an excellent overview of local hard rock mining techniques of that era up to the turn of the century. The Eagle/High Peak tour is highly recommended either before or after a visit to Just Frogs III.

There is no charge to access the cache site or the recommended parking.

The posted coordinates lead you to the first waypoint where you will find a day in 1870 identified as the date of origin for the nearby mine. Record the two digit day of the month as ab, where a is the first digit, b is the second digit. Notice the relationship between this date and the mine name. Below the mine date is listed a dedication date. Record it as cdef.

Now compute coordinates to the cache as N 33 04.da9, W 116 3e.(b-a)b3. There is no need to bushwhack to reach either the first waypoint or the cache.

The cache is an 8-ounce camouflaged plastic Jiffy peanut jar. It is concealed to avoid accidental discovery. Please replace and re-cover it after you have finished with logging and exchanges. The original contents include logbook and pencil plus, a new brightly colored beanbag frog key chain, a variety of painted frogs, a horned lizard, the Rice-a-roni Travel Bug, and, as befits this site, a gold dollar.
