Geocache Description:

The Beaver Dam Creek Restoration Project is an effort to restore eight acres of wetlands on the east side of the Beaver Dam Creek at the end of Clover Lane. This area provides important habitat for shorebirds, wading birds, waterfowl and other wetland dependent wildlife.

This area was covered with dredge spoil from when the creek was dredged many years ago. A dike was build from the dredge spoil, which prevented flooding of the marsh. The southern half of the area was overgrown by Pharagmites austrailis a plant that was taking over. By 2004 over 10,000 cubic yards of dredge spoil and vegetative material was removed. Four tidal channels and four tidal pools were constructed.

Along with Brookhaven volunteers members of the Beaver Dam Creek Task Force, Post-Morrow Foundations and other organizations several thousand plugs of smooth cord grass, spike grass and salt marsh bulrush has been planted.

Beaver Dam Creek is one of only five streams on Long Island with a large number of sea-run brown trout.

Wildlife activity has increased and is expected to continue to expand in the area with use by shorebirds, salt marsh fishes, blue crabs, striped killifish and more. A number of organizations will be monitoring the area to measure the changes and benefits to the local wildlife.
