Geocache Description:

The Porterfield Iron furnace is nestled in this beautiful and steep valley. The creek must be crossed twice to reach the cache, and the terrain difficulty is directly linked to the water depth. Under no circumstances should this cache be attempted from any other direction than the suggested parking area, due to extreme hazards.

The Porterfield Iron Furnace is nestled in a beautiful and steep valley. Please park at N41* 13.741 W 79*43.119 and begin your walk along the creek. Resist the temptation to approach from the north-west. A very high vertical cliff lies between you and the cache if you go that way. Death is a distinct possibility for those who choose that route.

When the water level is low, during late summer, this cache is quite easy to reach. When the water is high... it is not! If you can find another way around the water, be my guest!

Climb the furnace at your own risk, and look inside! Many of the associated structures nearby are still visible.

Dense tree cover makes the gps waypoint sketchy, and there are a lot of potential hiding spots, so read the spoiler before you annoy yourself looking.

This valley is a popular camping area among the locals, and therfore is an excellent cache-in-trash-out candidate. Sadly, the cache area itself is rather trashy... please help out and bring a garbage bag and haul out some beer cans.
