The co-ordinates above are for the Goodrich Castle carpark. The geocache is on Coppett Hill, which is about a mile and a quarter from the castle carpark. It is a stiff uphill walk mostly on footpaths - hence the two and a half star terrain rating – but it’s well worth the effort. It isn't accessible to buggies - and no mountain bikes please. An OS map will help you find your way from the car park to the cache.
To find the (British OS Grid) co-ordinates for the cache, go to the information boards by the Goodrich Castle visitor centre and tearoom. Look for the answers to these questions:
- At least how many species of butterfly can be found on nearby Coppett Hill? ab
- In which year was the Coppett Hill Trust set up? wxyz
- For this question you may need to ask in the visitor centre, or go online to English Heritage: In which century was the castle's well-preserved keep built? cd
The coordinates of the geocache (British OS Grid) are: SO 5(d+z)(a+b)(x-d)2 1(y-c)(c+z)(b+x)6
Goodrich castle has a large carpark - parking costs £3. There is an excellent visitors' centre and tearoom, and the castle is well worth a visit. Goodrich village has two pubs (Ye Hostelrie and Cross Keys). There is a really good village shop and tearoom called Woods in nearby Whitchurch village. Coppett Hill is a 98 hectare nature reserve. It lies within the River Wye Area of Outstanding National Beauty, and affords wonderful views of the River Wye looping its way towards Symonds Yat. The Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains lie to the west. Coppett Hill has been open common land for several hundred years. In times gone by bracken was collected for animal bedding and sheep were grazed. Several cottages on the hill still have commoners’ rights allowing them to graze the hill and gather firewood. The Coppett Hill Common Trust owns and cares for the hill, and we gratefully acknowledge their volunteers’ help in preparing this cache.
