Geocache Description:

Delco Magneto v 3.0 is a three-stage multicache starting at Delco Park in Kettering.
Rated two stars because it's time consuming and requires compass skills.

NOTE: This is a NEW cache. Those who have bagged Delco Magneto v1.0/2.0 will have a leg up on this one but the final cache is different.

This is the second reincarnation of Delco Magneto:

  • Version 1 was accidentally hurled to its death by e_gadgetgeek.
  • Version 2 disappeared, likely stolen and was archived.
  • Version 3 has an additional stage and is now a microcache. What was originally the final (and evidently "not-so-good") hiding location is now a second stage with coordinates to the final stage in another park.

Some important info for your mission, should you choose to accept it:

  • This cache requires a compass and basic compass skills. A compass with a rotating dial is best. Even if your GPS has a built in electronic compass, I recommend you use an "old-fashioned" compass instead.
  • If you don't know how to use a compass, try this link: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22read+this+or+get+lost%22
  • This cache may be time consuming. Probably not a good cache to tackle on your lunch hour.
  • Best attacked with at least two people

Let's get started...

The second stage cache coordinates listed below have three significant digits removed.
The missing digits are represented by variables A, B, and C.

In order to obtain the values for these variables (and ultimately get the final coordinates) you must walk a prescribed course which, once completed, will reveal the missing values for A and B in the form of track log art. Value C is the average of A and B.

  1. The starting coordinates are for a drain grate in the middle of a grassy field where you'll have plenty of room to walk around in circles and look silly to the uninitiated. You can perform these steps just about anywhere really but this particular location is close to the second stage for convenience.

  2. Reset the track log in your GPS. Enable track logging if it is not already turned on.

  3. Refer to the table near the bottom of this page for heading and distance instructions.

  4. Set your compass dial to the first listed heading, turn your body in place until the North index line and compass needle align, and then walk the heading the prescribed number of paces.

  5. Once you have completed the first leg, dial in the next heading and walk the prescribed number of paces.

  6. Repeat Steps 3-5 until you complete the entire course.

  7. Once you have completed the course, zoom your GPS display in or out as needed to view the entire path you just walked. You should be able to discern values for A and B.

  8. Calculate C using the following formula: (A+B)/2.

  9. You now have the missing numbers needed to complete the second stage coordinates. The second stage is a tape marker affixed to a stationary object that records the final coordinates.

  10. The final cache is in a different park. It is a backup tape case with a small log book. Bring your own pen. Since you're in the neighborhood, why not bag Ushio's Portal too?

Helpful Tips:

  • Ask a helper to escort you and call out heading and distance numbers at the completion of each leg.
  • Your escort should carry the GPS too. You should be looking only at the compass and counting your steps, not trying to guess what you’re drawing as you go. If you get distracted and lose your place on the list, you'll have to start over.
  • Walking slowly with short pauses between legs will greatly improve the quality (and readability) of the track log.
