"Manzanita" Falls lies along a small, wooded drainage in a lightly
visited section of
the Catalinas. These waters will eventually flow into greater
Molino Creek just South
of Molino Campground.
There are no paths that reach all the way to the coordinates, but
a short hike on the
Bug Spring trail can get you fairly close. Longer, more dramatic
routes (with multiple
waterfall encounters) are also available for the adventurous
cacher with some time on
their hands. At one time or another, I've brought most of my
family that has ever
cached with me here, so the terrain can't be more than 1.5 stars,
right? ;) I'm
actually rating it 3 stars for the possibilty of having to
negotiate through rock
outcrops or thickets of manzanita.
Best visited after a rainy period or during low-elevation snowmelt
since the whole point
of the cache is to see water running in the desert! Hopefully,
somebody will impress
me, and post some really amazing shots of the falls.
After tearing apart my garage, I still couldn't find the container
I bought last year to
place at this spot. So until the frost or rodents get it, the
cache container will be
a small tupperware starting out with a logbook, pencil, brand new
pedometer, 2008
cat calendar, and a carabiner compass. When accessing the cache,
please do so
from the West side of the rock since the container won't pull
through from the side
nearest to the creek. To prevent undue damage to the area from
searching, you
can use the picture below to easily pinpoint the hiding
place.
