Geocache Description:

The cache is kept in one location that could be considered as the best place to start exploring the Lake Maninjau area.

This cache will lead you to an abundant source of knowledge about the Lake Maninjau, the deep rainforest and also about wildboar/pig hunting using 3,000 dogs. When you find this cache please use these keywords and get your hiking boots ready: "Mr. Porcupine", "Pak Zal", "Babi Hutan", "Sarasah Seven Waterfalls" and "Poison Ivy" About the Lake Maninjau: Lake Maninjau is a crater-lake. Length is about 16 km, width about 7 km. The average depth is 105 m with a maximum of 165 m. There are two access routes, one at the westside and one at the eastside. The lake is surrounded by wooded mountains and of a surprising beauty, with often changing vistas. Surplus water is carried off at the westside. At that place a hydro-electric plant was built some years ago. At the north-east side are narrow low-laying plains where most people live, around the villages Maninjau and Bayur. The hotels and guesthouses are situated in that area. The eastern access route has 44 hairpin bends. The first time it's somewhat creepy, but one gets used to it quickly. There are regular bus connections with among other places Bukittinggi, an attractive town at a distance of approximately an hour away. The best season to visit Maninjau is said to be february and later, untill july. The rainy season is from september/oktober untill approx. the turn of the year. In the rainy season the weather is sunny untill the end of the afternoon when rain starts. It is said that it rains sometimes one or two days continuously. It's somewhat cooler and these tropical rains have their own charm.
