Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the Chatfield State Park Dog Park on the south side of C-470. Bring your dog. There is an off-leash area nearby to the north. The wooded area around the cache is not, however.

My 6 year old daughter and I hid this cache on a nice summer day. While searching for a good spot we found a dead bear carcass in the woods. However, this is a well travelled area with people and dogs. You shouldn't run into any trouble.

The most difficult part of this cache is finding the place to park. The cache itself is located on the northeast side of Chatfield State Park. It is east of the dam in the dog park. However, there is free parking on the north side of C-470 outside the park with a trail that crosses under the freeway.

IMPORTANT NOTE (3/20/04): There have been a couple of break-ins at the free parking lot on the north side of C-470. One just before we arrived this day. It seems as though someone waits in the parking lot and waits until no one is there. If you park there, don't leave any valuables. Park in the park if possible.

To get to the free parking area you must be travelling west on C-470. The exit is unmarked at N 39d 34.067' W 105d 03.053' and is roughly 5-6 tenths of a mile west of Santa Fe (just before mile marker 14) and about 3/4 mile before the Platte Canyon exit (which is marked). Exit the freeway turn right and then right again through the fence. Travel back east along the dirt entrance road and park in one of the two designated parking areas. When you get out of the car walk east to the Platte River Greenway trail and turn right (south) and go under C-470.

Of course, you can also enter Chatfield State Park from Wadsworth, but there is an entrance fee of about $6.

The cache initially contains quite a few items as well as a disposable camera for visitors to take pictures of themselves. I may create a web page for this cache when I get some pictures and post them on the web. The initial inventory consists of a solar powered calculator, two smail "fish" bubble bottles, a toy skateboard, a butterfly ink stamp, a toy frog, a bouncy ball with a fish inside, three jingle bells, a Lake Tahoe postcard, a toy Piglet and a bracelet.

The container I used is somewhat novel (at least from my experience). I used PVC drainpipe and glued a cap on one end and a screw-on top on the other. It turned out to be hard to open so I added a eye bolt to make it easier. Let me know what you think.

Good hunting!
