Prouts Neck is one of the most scenic areas of Scarborough, Maine. This cache is just off the "Cliff Walk" trail. Enjoy!

Prouts Neck is where the family estate of the famous painter, Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is located and where he lived in 1883 to create beautiful sea scenes such as "Sunlight on the Coast". Check out (visit link) for more information about Prouts Neck.

There is an easy hike around the neck which is on public property. However, there is private land right up to the trail, so please be considerate of this private property.

The cache is in an official ammo box with lots of goodies.

There is no parking at the trail head closest to the cache. If you are driving, the closest public parking is at Ferry Beach, about a 2 mile hike from the cache site. This beach is located at N 43 31.668', W 070 19.192'. You can walk the street back to the main road, then walk to the end of Prouts Neck to the trail head. Or, walk the entire beach and take a board walk to the street from the end of the beach. Then walk straight ahead to the other end of the cliff walk at N 43 43.037', W 070 18.832'. It is about 1 mile from the Ferry Beach parking lot to this trail head, then about another mile around the cliff walk to the cache. So be prepared for about a 4 mile round trip hike. That is why I increased the difficulty level, but it is worth the effort if you enjoy the same ocean scenery that Winslow Homer captured in many of his paintings.

A warm November day prompted us to take a bike ride down Prouts Neck. We made the short hike to the cache location. I've biked to the end of this road millions of times and never knew this trail was there. Thanks for the cache and finding a beautiful location!!

Parked at Ferry Beach and being a runner I ran to the cache. Wasn't too sure about going down the road past the gate because it said private property. Hopefully I took the right way in. I did find a trail on the right side past the gate. The sign on the trail said pass at your own risk. It did look like a public trail. Never been out on the neck before and I live right in the area. I just thought that this was all private property before. Thanks for bringing me to this trail that I never knew existed. I took a goofy picture of me with the camera. TFTC SL

It was awesome here today. Beautiful walk on the beach and the Cliff Walk. Decided to walk back on the beach instead of the road we were enjoying it so much. Thanks for bringing us here.

There are all kinds of geocaches --- park and grab, puzzles, earch, etc. I would categorize this one as a 'destination' geocache. I say destination because getting there was so much fun. We parked at the Ferry Beach Park. It was a foggy day so they let us park for free. We found the geocache just of the parking lot then did the beach walk. We saw some nice 'least terns' at Ferry Rock on the beach walk. We ended up at the Western beach and took the walkway up across from the Black Point Inn. We did notice that going back this way the walk access to the beach said "Prouts Neck Country Club members only'. We then loved the walk along the road. We could have stop for lunch at the little store but had already had lunch. We took a photo op at the Yacht club sign to qualify for the Earth Geocache out in the bay. We then found the end of the public road. It looks like you are going into someone's driveway but if you look carefully you'll see a "Cliff Walk" sign about 25 feet down the driveway on the left. We took the trail and found the cache after looking for a few minutes and reading others comments. We then continued on the cliff walk which has outstanding views! We would advise hiking boots thought since it can be very muddy after a rain. We stopped several times to admire the views. We the trail seems to end on a shingle beach keep following the beach to East Point and you'll find the trail again. The trail finally ends up in the back driveway of the Black Point Inn, just across from where you come up from the Western beach... a perfect loop! We took the travel bug for its next destination in Canada. TFTC.... I love finding new places that are so close by!
