Prouts Neck is where the family estate of the famous painter,
Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is located and where he lived in 1883 to
create beautiful sea scenes such as "Sunlight on the Coast". Check
out (visit link) for more information
about Prouts Neck.
There is an easy hike around the neck which is on public
property. However, there is private land right up to the trail, so
please be considerate of this private property.
The cache is in an official ammo box with lots of goodies.
There is no parking at the trail head closest to the cache. If
you are driving, the closest public parking is at Ferry Beach,
about a 2 mile hike from the cache site. This beach is located at N
43 31.668', W 070 19.192'. You can walk the street back to the main
road, then walk to the end of Prouts Neck to the trail head. Or,
walk the entire beach and take a board walk to the street from the
end of the beach. Then walk straight ahead to the other end of the
cliff walk at N 43 43.037', W 070 18.832'. It is about 1 mile from
the Ferry Beach parking lot to this trail head, then about another
mile around the cliff walk to the cache. So be prepared for about a
4 mile round trip hike. That is why I increased the difficulty
level, but it is worth the effort if you enjoy the same ocean
scenery that Winslow Homer captured in many of his paintings.
