History
The inhabitants of Watertown pledged to erect a plague-column after the epidemic in 1710. However, they managed to achieve their pledge only in the early 1720s because they were busy with the erection of the Holy Trinity statue in the Buda Castle.
Sculptor Antal Hörger completed the plague-column in 1724, which was inaugurate with big ceremony in the same year. Maria’s figure was standing on the top of the column, which could be found between the statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Kathleen of Siena. A German traveler from 1730 described several side statues besides the two main ones: Ahasverus, giving the scepter to Esther, Noah’s ark with a pigeon above it, Illes and a grey friar, holding a book in his hand with citation from the Bible on Maria’s immaculate conception.
They had to dismantle the statue in 1747 (after less than a quarter of a century) because it was so damaged due to the very bad material of the statue. It was re-erected in a simpler form without the side figures in 1749 funded by public contributions. The statue was standing on the Bomb square (now Batthyany square) till 1834, when building a military guardhouse took its place. This is when they transferred the statue to its current place on Maria square (called previously Irma square). This statue was also heavily damaged during the WWII, when it fell from its base and broke.

The column is accessible
- by car: regulated parking is available.
- by public transportation: by bus #39 to Maria square or by public transportation to Batthyány square and on foot from that.
Important: There is no pen in the cache, so bring your own! Handle the cache carefully! The hiding place is very busy in the day time. Watch out for muggles!

A vízivárosiak, az 1710. évi pestisjárvány után, a pestistõl való félelmükben fogadalmat tettek egy pestis-oszlop felállítására. Azonban a szintén ez idõ tájt épülõ várbeli Szentháromság-szobor építési munkálatai annyira igénybe vették a vízivárosiak teherbíró képességét, hogy fogadalmuk megvalósítására csak az 1720-as évek elején kerülhetett sor.
A pestis-oszlop szobrászati munkájával Hörger Antal 1724-ben készült el és azt még ugyanabban az évben fel is avatták ünnepélyes keretek között. A Nepomuki Szent János és Sienai Szent Katalin szobra között álló oszlopot Mária alakja zárta le. Egy német utazó 1730-as évekbõl fennmaradt leírásából tudjuk, hogy az oszlopnak a két említett nagyobb szobron kívül egyéb mellékalakjai is voltak: Ahasverus, amint Eszternek nyújtja a jogart; Noé bárkája, felette galamb; Illés, továbbá egy ferences szerzetes, aki könyvet tart kezében Mária szeplõtelen fogantatására utaló bibliai idézetekkel.
A rendkívül rossz anyagból készült szobor még egy negyed századot sem ért meg. Már 1747-ben annyira elmálott, hogy le kellett bontani. 1749-ben építették fel újra közadakozásból, de már egyszerûbb formában, a mellékalakok nélkül. Az akkori Bomba téren (a mai Batthyány téren) állott a szobor 1834-ig, amikor az ott felépülõ katonai õrháznak kellett helyet adnia. Ekkor helyezték át a jelenlegi helyére, a Mária, késõbb Irma, majd az ismét Mária nevet viselõ térre. Ez a szobor is erõsen megrongálódott a második világháborúban: lezuhant talpazatáról és összetört.

- tömegközlekedéssel: a 39-es busszal a Mária térig vagy tömegközlekedéssel a Batthyány térig és onnan gyalog.
Fontos: Nincs toll a ládában, ezért hozd magaddal a sajátodat! A ládával bánj óvatosan! A rejtekhely nagyon forgalmas napközben. Vigyázz a muglikra!
