Due to the need to relocate the final stage of this cache, we
are allowing a temporary remedy until a good location can be found.
Anyone completing the first stage of this cache, can fulfill the
rapelling/climbing requirements of the second stage by attending
any Cliffsides and Grapevines event. I will have the cache final at
that location so you can sign the logs and make whatever trades,
etc.
This cache begins at Purgatory Chasm, located in Sutton,
Massachusetts. The listed coordinates will take you to the entrance
of a small cavern and the micro container is located within it. As
the GPS can be very flighty in the chasm, we have included a couple
of pictures to help you along, both above and below the ground. The
cache is located in the third chamber. As with any form of
"caving" proper safety gear should be worn, such as protective
headgear, a light source and spare batteries, and in wet weather, a
change of clothes. A rope to use as a guide and possibly assist in
entry/exit is recommended, but not required. ALWAYS have a
second person with you as a safety measure!!
The second stage is more in line with our traditional "Cliffsides"
type caches, but is absolutely going to require rappelling/belaying
to obtain. The location was deliberately chosen to eliminate all
but a very competent climber from obtaining. For those that
understand the ratings, it is a 5.9 climb. This stage ABSOLUTELY
should not be undertaken without proper climbing gear and safety
equipment.
Now for a few more details:
1. Purgatory Chasm has many boulders that you will be climbing
over and around. There is a trail marked in blue paint that you
should follow. The rocks are smooth in some places and can be
slippery, so be VERY careful in the cold and wet weather. The
leaves and pine needles can also be slippery. Wear boots or shoes
that provide good ankle support and traction, as a sprained ankle
can ruin a really nice day.
2. Climbing in the chasm requires a permit (free of charge after
examining your equipment) and is not allowed on Sundays or
Holidays. Free Ascent of the walls is PROHIBITED without being on a
rope.
3. The initial stage will require you being able to go
underground to a depth of about 6 feet, and go in about 35 feet
total. It is VERY dark and close in some places. See hint for a
rough set of directions, if you can not find the third chamber - it
is not difficult.
The final stage location has a very heavy cover of leaves and
pine needles on the approaches, making it very slippery in places.
PLEASE use caution in and around the area as the potential for a
fall exists. Those bringing young children will need to keep an eye
on them!!
4. Logging Requirements:
Individual cachers must locate the first stage cache container
as well as the “URL” initials located on the chamber wall (See
Photo). Submit a photo of yourself holding the container, showing
those initials in the photograph. This will verify you were
actually at the cache location. Finds logged without following this
rule will be deleted (see exception below)
Teams: A team must be fully present in the above photograph. In
the event more than four people make up the team, the team leader
MUST be in the photo, with three other members of choice. No
grabbing the cache and taking it out for everyone to get, unless an
exception is requested.
Exceptions: In the event a cacher cannot enter the cave due to
physical limitations, they may have another cacher retrieve the
cache, bring it out for a photo of the pair together with the
container, then return the cache to its original location. When you
submit the photo, please explain the situation, so that we may
adjust the cache accordingly.
