Geocache Description:

An easy drive to cache. The road is a typical country gravel road, can be busy and dusty in summer when grain trucks are busy. As with all country roads, take care, especially at intersections. The area around this building has abundant thick high, grass, so please watch out for snakes at this time of the year. Roadside vegetation is also abundant, so wear solid footwear.

Interpretive Plaque
The first school in this area was at ‘Loudon Brae’, the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bailey, their daughter Miss Blain Bailey was the teacher.

In 1902, the subdivision of ‘Yongala Station’ brought many farming families onto the land east of ‘Loudon Brae’ and a new school was needed for the children.

A small block of land on the western end of section 231, Hundred of Belalie, was offered by J.J. and H. Ellis and in 1905 the community, under the leadership of Mr. Robert Bailey and Mr. George Napper, built this school with the supervision of local builder, Julius Arndt. It was named the Loudon Brae School.

The business of the school was conducted by a committee and a board of trustees who leased the school to the Education Department until it closed on November 18 1950.
For forty-five years this small school provided primary education for the many children living on surrounding farms.

One of these was Reginald Murray Williams who attended from c1914 to 1918. He was later to become a well known Australian who played a significant role in the development of our outback heritage including the establishment of The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach, Queensland.

The cache is a plastic screw top container with note book, pen and swaps.

After finding this cache, take a drive to nearby Browne’s Hill for an all round view of this part of South Australia.
