The Chemung Mine was the main mine for the city of Masonic located nearby. The Chemung Mine and Mill has several great old buildings to explore including the remains of the mill. Old pulleys for the leather straps can be seen in the rafters. There are also at least two shafts right next to the buildings. I went just a little ways in as I was not prepared to explore a mine. Very cool!
The road up from Bridgeport is a good dirt road that any car can make, although the last several hundred feet up to the mill are a little rocky. Our Durango made it just fine. Just over the mountain is the ghost town of Masonic.
The cache is fairly easy to get to, just watch out for the open pits near where the mine runs. A short scramble up the rocks will take you to the cache, an ammo can.
The mine is also supposed haunted! The poltergeist only appears on Saturday nights, so beware!
