A great hike up to Mt. Elijah past the Bigelow Lakes. Hike rated moderate.
To get to the trailhead you can either come up Cave Camp Rd from Williams, OR, or from the Oregon Caves side. From Williams, take Cave Camp Rd, pavement ends after 6.7 miles, bear right at the fork after another.8 mile. After another 2.9 miles turn left at the intersection onto USFS 079 through an open gate. Continue another 4 miles, you will pass another open gate then turn left, the road isn't marked at the turn but once you get on the road you will see the sign indicating 070. Road will end at a parking area, this is the trail head. Walk .5 mile along a decommissioned roadbed and you will see an old trail sign on the left for Bigelow Lakes/ Mt Elijah trail. Follow the trail past the lakes (big ponds actually and a nice side trip). Keep on the trails to the right to get to Mt. Elijah where you will have a 360 degree view. The cache is located up on top here in the rocks, it is in a plastic vitamin bottle spray painted brown but the brown was already wearing off and white was showing when I placed it. You can make a loop by continuing on the trail toward the Oregon Caves and when you see an unmarked but well defined spur trail after another 1.2 miles. Time of year for this hike can be from late June to early November just depending on the snow in the mountains. Usually the best time is July/August for tons of wildflowers. See Evelyn Rother's "Williams Area Trail Guide" for more info on this hike and others in the area. Once you get to Cave Camp Rd it will take almost an hour to get to the trail head so start early.
