Geocache Description:

SS Wisconsin Cache

This cache is for those in the Geocaching community who are accomplished divers. If you are not a certified diver trained in wreck & deep diving DO NOT attempt this cache!

Due to the depth, and visibility, it is recommended to use a good dive light and be advanced certified. You should NOT dive or penetrate this wreck without proper training and equipment. The first point of this multi-cache involves diving on the wreck of the SS Wisconsin and obtaining some information. That information will then be used to complete a simple math exercise to learn where the final cache point is located.

The steamer Wisconsin was a steel freighter of 215 feet in length. On the night of Oct. 29, 1929 off of Kenosha, WI, the Wisconsin's cargo of iron castings, automobiles, and boxed freight shifted during a North gale. The ship's pumps could not keep up with the incoming water. The tug Search, two Coast Guard vessels, and a local fishing boat came to assist and take passengers aboard. While waiting for her running mate, the Illinois, to come from Milwaukee and tow the Wisconsin to the Kenosha port, she suddenly plunged beneath the pounding waves. Nine crew members went down with her, including the captain who was pulled from the water but died later on shore.

Today, the Wisconsin lies six and half miles East-Southeast of Kenosha in 130 feet of water. The superstructure is gone with I-beams and supports remaining. Inside the wreck much machinery, and cargo can still be seen along with three automobiles, a Hudson, Essex, and a Chevrolet touring car. Credit to www.DiverDan.com for this information.

Here are some added sites that contain information on this wreck.

Initial coordinates: N 42° 31.80' W 087° 42.55' for the wreck

Final Coordinates:

TO BE COMPLETED based upon N 42° 28.603’ and W 087° 50.781’ as your starting point for calculations. YOU DO NOT VISIT THESE COORDINATES, only follow the math below.

Locate the Northern most buoys and dive on the BOW of the wreck. Follow the “down line” until you reach the chain that attaches it to the ship. At that base of that chain is a small plastic tag with four numbers on it. Add the four numbers and remember that total.

Take the number and multiply it by itself. Add that product to the minutes of the North coordinates and subtract it from the West coordinates listed above. That will take you to a container. There is a FTF patch for the lucky person who is the First to Find, which will be sent to the winning Geocacher when they properly log their find.

To document your dive, please post a photo of you on your diving boat/platform when you post your find report.

Please be certain and read the disclaimer from Geocaching.com relative to risks involved in pursuing a Geocache. Also, make certain you are properly trained, equipped and that you know what you are doing before attempting the diving part of this challenge.

Thanks to our friends from the Seaquest for their help in setting this one up. A good diver is always someone who is trained, cautious and prepared.
