Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to a small rare keystone bridge that has been preserved by actually building a modern bridge over it. Many people drive this gravel road daily without being aware of the historic structure that remains beneath.

Keystone arch construction requires that carefully shaped stones be laid in place over a temporary wooden support until the last center stone (the “keystone”) completed the arch to lock the structure together allowing the wooden support to be removed.

This is one of several small bridges originally contracted by the county around the turn of the century utilizing the abundant limestone which could be locally quarried. Built in 1902, it has out-survived other bridges built at the same time of traditional timber or steel stringers. It was built by A.C. Boyle and Co. of McGregor using 65 cords of stone at a cost of $1,463. The bridge exhibits an exceptionally high degree of craftsmanship and historical integrity and was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1998.

Please park safely on the shoulder of the gravel road allowing other drivers to cross the one-lane bridge during your search.

The cache: The cache is a regular-sized lock’n’lock type container with a logbook, pencil, and starts with a few nice trade items. Please sign the log, trade fairly, and return the cache to its original location and state of concealment for others to enjoy.
