Geocache Description:

A cache located on top of Mount Gwanak

One nice aspect with the city of Seoul is the fact that it is surrounded by mountains from where you can have a beautiful view on the skyline. One of the most spectacular views is from Mount Gwanak (Gwanaksan) about 10km to the south of downtown. The top of the mountain is 629m. Portions of it lie in the Gwanak-gu and Geumcheon-gu districts of Seoul; other portions lie in the neighboring cities of Anyang and Gwacheon.

The name gwanak means "hat-shaped peak," and refers to its gat-like profile. Thus Gwanaksan literally means "mountain of the hat-shaped peak." The local people refer to it as "Gwanak," since san already contains the meaning of "mountain." Together with Songaksan in Kaesong, Gamaksan in Paju, Uaksan in Pocheon, and Hwaaksan in Gapyeong, Gwanaksan is considered as one of the five representative peaks of Gyeonggi-do (gyeonggi o-ak).

A good way to reach the top of the hill is to start at the campus of Seoul National University which is located just northwest of the mountain for the way up to the top, and to descend to the Gwacheon national government complex which lies to the southeast. For the uphill trail you have to climb sometimes quite steep but it offers a scenic view. It requires good shoes and outdoor clothing. The way down to the southeast is less challenging and steps and stairs are provided. The downhill trail goes along a river in which children can bath in summer. At the starting and ending point you'll find bus stops for public transportation. You can download a GPX track file for this tour here: (visit link) . I also put the tour profiles in the gallery of this listing. On the mountain you can find nice Buddhist temples, including Wongaksa.

Due to the many muggles around we placed the cache a bit aside to the main trail. But still be careful, the muggles may stroll around everywhere particularly on busy weekends or holidays.

Have fun climbing and caching and please put some photos in your logs!

Cheers Qoolman
