Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Manitowoc’s WWII Submarines series in honor of the 28 submarines built here during WWII. On April 30, 1942 the USS PETO was the first of 10 Gato and 18 Balao Class Submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company and launched sideways into the Manitowoc River. This company of 500 employees pre-war swelled to more than 7000 workers of 3 shifts, building one submarine every 7 ½ weeks. Let us never forget those who worked and fought for our freedom.<

This is another one of my favorite hides. Too many clues/hints will make this one too easy. Go find it! This park is the site of French Creek Days, the local summer festival. Enjoy the new park and enjoy this micro cache! Oh, and Bring your own writing utensil.

There is no longer a need to verify your find with the Secret Submarine Code Word.

Ker-sploosh! KRAKEN Patch Conning Tower

Probably no legendary sea monster was as horrifying as the Kraken. According to stories this huge, many armed, creature could reach as high as the top of a sailing ship's main mast. Kraken's would attack a ship, wrap their arms around the hull and capsize it. The crew would drown or be eaten by the monster. What's amazing about the Kraken stories is that, of all the sea monster tales we have, we have the best evidence that these are real.

Keel laid 13 December 1943    Launched 30 April 1944   Commissioned 8 September 1944; Lcdr. Thomas H. Henry in command;

Departing on her third war patrol on 19 May 1945, KRAKEN set course for the Gulf of Siam. After searching in vain for enemy targets, she shifted to the Java Sea where on 19 June she bombarded Merak and riddled a coaster and a small ship with 5-inch and 40-mm. projectiles. She saw the coaster sink and she left the small ship ablaze before clearing the harbor. Three days later while chasing an eight-ship convoy, KRAKEN torpedoes sank an oiler and a coastal steamer and her guns inflicted heavy damage on one of the Japanese submarine chasers. Then KRAKEN proudly sailed into Fremantle, Australia 3 July 1945, ending her most successful patrol.

Decommissioned and striken 15 December 1971; Sold for scrapping 1 February 1974
