Fairly easy geocache well suited for a family
day out!
The Woodson Bridge State
Recreation Area is a 142-acre oak wooded park along the Sacramento
River with bathrooms, drinking water, playgrounds,
fishing, bar-b-ques, year-round camping, nature trails
(hint hint), boat launch, tables, horseshoe pits...everything to
have a great time!
It also contains a
328-acre preserve, a dense native riparian forest that is the
winter home to the Bald Eagle.
This jungle-like
grove displays some of the last remaining riparian habitat to be
found in California.
Over a hundred
plant species have been identified throughout the park, the most
prominent being the large valley oak.
Beneath the oaks
and cottonwoods along the river is a profusion of elderberry, wild
grape, and wildflowers in season.
Park close to the river (you don't have to pay for
parking if you park at the bridge), and head North from the
"Rainbow Area"
The trail is well-packed, easy to follow, and
easy for the youngsters to hike.
Just be aware of the small cliffs near the
river if you wander too far from the beaten
path!
I chose a hiding area with a clear view of
the sky, so reception should not be a
problem.
There are lots of people in the area during
warm weather, so be discreet.
Also, with the warm weather, this area (like
most wooded California areas) is prone to snakes and poison
oak.
As always, be careful when poking around
logs and rocks. Tread lightly, pack out your trash, and have lots
of fun!!
Happy
Caching!!
