Geocache Description:

Meet and Greet at the Des Plaines Oasis

DATE: March 15
LOCATION: Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), milepost 74.5
TIME: 7:00p-9:00p

This just may be the final event at the Des Plaines Oasis before the Illinois Tollway Authority removes the structure to make way for the extension of the Elgin-Ohare Expressway and the widening of the Jane Addams (I-90) Tollway.

Here is a little history of this interesting building:

The Des Plaines Oasis was one of 5 built in 1959 by Standard Oil of Indiana (AMOCO).

They were essentially restaurants built above the highway on bridges that were accessible from either direction.

The restaurants were originally run by the Fred Harvey organization, but in 1975 they were taken over by Howard Johnson, who remodeled the interior and added their distinctive orange roofs.

Remember stopping for ice cream?

In 1984 McDonalds took over the food service and Mobil replaced Amoco.

The Oasis was torn down and rebuilt once again and is how it is today.

Check out the scene from the Blues Brothers (1980)

So come on out tonight to remember the good times and events that were had at the Des Plaines Oasis. It will surely be missed by all of us.
