This is the first cache I placed. The cache is located in Devil’s Den Preserve. Devil’s Den is owned by The Nature Conservancy, and it is the largest nature preserve in southwestern Connecticut with 1,746 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and rock ledges. It contains 21 miles of well marked trails. To get to the parking area, take Rt. 53 (Newton Tpke.) to Godfrey Rd to Pent Rd. The lot is at the end of Pent Rd. Pick up a trail map in the parking area.
The container is a big plastic jar that once contained hamster food. Please try to pack the container back in a neat fashion when you leave.
The cache is a good 1-1/2 to 2 miles into the park, so figure on a 3.5 to 4 mile hike round trip.. The trails are well marked and maintained, but some contain fairly steep grades, which is why I gave it a 3 rating for terrain. At a comfortable pace, figure on an hour to get to the cache and an hour to get back to your car. It would make a nice day hike with children if you take frequent breaks and pack lunch.
A trail map with the cache location marked is located at http://shiftlock.com/devils_treasure/DevilsDenMap.jpg.
