As details of the weekend activities develop, we will post changes to this cache page so add it to your watch list to stay informed of the updated information.

The days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer so it is time for all good geocachers to get together again. The theme for the 2005 Spring Fling is Rock & Roll. Won't you rock with us at Red Rock Canyon? (Just don't roll down the bluffs!)

Geocachers may attend and participate for the entire weekend or only for a portion of the weekend. We have reserved a campground (Area 4a) with several tent and RV sites and a large picnic pavilion (#5) for the event. The coordinates above are for the picnic shelter where we will headquarter. Cost of tent sites are $9.00 per night and will be collected by park officials. RV sites are also available in the campground. Camping fees are to be paid to park officials at the campground.

For more information about the park facilities, call (405)542-6344 or write:
Red Rock Canyon State Park
P.O. Box 502
Hinton, OK 73047-0502

For those who do not wish to camp, there are motel accomodations available in nearby Hinton (5 miles away) or Weatherford (20 miles west). Contact me for more information.

Although official activities will not start until Saturday, many cachers will arrive Friday for fellowship with other geocachers (and to nab the best campsites). Join us early.

Contact me directly with any questions or comments. (Just click on the [profile] link above and send me an e-mail). Even though the event is several weeks away, if you plan to participate please post a note to this cache and indicate how many people will be in your party. This will be a big aid in planning the activities, seeking sponsors, and obtaining prize donations.

Meals
BSA Troop 84 will once again be serving great meals to all participants. Three meals will be provided - Saturday supper, Sunday breakfast, and Sunday lunch. You should arrange to provide your own lunch for Saturday (and any earlier meals).

Registration / Pre-registration
Each individual participant (not team) must complete a registration form and sign the waiver/release. The fee for the weekend activities, including all three meals will be $20.00 per person ($10.00 for children 12 years of age and under). If paid by May 1st, the costs will be $15.00 and $7.50 respectively. After May 1st, only money orders will be accepted. To register for the event download the Registration Form and return it to the listed address.

The Events
During the weekend, there will be several events/games. The details of each of the games will be posted to the Oklahoma Geocaching site. Click the links below for more details of the games.

King of the Road – King of the Road is inspired by the TV show “The Amazing Race” and is designed for two-person teams. Each team will compete against other teams to complete the King of the Road course. At each stop your team must complete a task or stunt to obtain the coordinates or directions to the next stage. There will be Detours (a choice between two tasks) and Roadblocks (a task that only one person may perform) and lots of other surprises. Pre-registration is required.

Battle of the Bands – fka Hide & Seek. Design, create, and hide your best cache for others to find and judge. Only one entry(cache) per person. No pre-registration is required. Remember to make three copies of your cache write-up page and include an ID token in the cache container. Both hiders and seekers will be eligible for the prize drawings.

RINGO – In RINGO (Red Rock Bingo) each registered participant will be given a blank RINGO card and the coordinates to dozens of film canisters hidden throughout Red Rock Canyon State Park. In each canister are stickers with numbers. As you find the canisters, you will “fill” your RINGO card with the numbered stickers in any order that you wish – 24 stickers, in all. During the Sunday lunch and awards ceremony, we will play Bingo for prizes.

Cache Around the Park – For this Kid's Cache event special caches will be hidden throughout Red Rock Park for the younger cachers. Each cache will contain toy prizes (no trading necessary!). There are also lettered beads to collect and unscramble the “secret” word. The Kid’s Caches are interspersed in the same area as the Battle of the Band caches so that parents and children can cache together.

**Prizes**
Although "the joy is in the hunt", a number of prizes will be awarded to the participants of the events/games. We have two free nights at any Oklahoma State Lodge, emergency road kits, t-shirts, and lots of other prizes. Most of the prizes will awarded by random draw so you don't have to be fastest, strongest, or most clever to win. However, your chances to win will be increased by your participation and success in completing the events.

Spring Fling T-shirts
2005 Oklahoma Geocaching Rocks t-shirts may be purchased for $8.00 each (more for larger sizes). The t-shirt designs and order forms can be found at T-shirts. These t-shirts will be ash gray with blue ink. Please have your orders in by May 1st and make checks payable to Jill Olson (jillcachingin). Mail the order form and check to the address on the order form.

2005 Spring Fling Rock & Roll Commemorative Cache
We plan to place and leave a new cache in Red Rock Canyon State Park to commemorate this event. If you would like to participate, please bring an themed (Rock & Roll) item to include in the cache.

About Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon State Park is located about 50 miles west of Oklahoma City, just south of Hinton, OK. Its 310 acres contain some of the most beautiful examples of nature's artwork in Oklahoma. The steep, rugged cliffs make it a favorite spot for rappelling and hiking. The canyon floor is home to a rich ecosystem that includes many varieties of trees, birds and animal life. A spring-fed creek flows year round in the canyon.

Before the mid-1800's, Plains Indians used Red Rock Canyon as a winter camp, sheltered from the cold prairie winds. Later, Red Rock Canyon became a landmark on the California Road. This trail led westward and during the 1849 California Gold Rush the canyon was a haven for weary travelers.

Today, Red Rock Canyon has a stocked fishing pond and concessions located in the Canyon Campground. There are two wonderful nature trails with interpretive information. Geocaching opportunities abound both on the canyon floor and along the rim. Currently there are several traditional caches in the park and several others in the vicinity.

Caution!
While hiking is permitted along the canyon rim, there are no maintained hiking trails in that area. The sandstone around the canyon rim can be very unstable and slippery. Caution is advised near the rim.
