There is no highway signage to indicate the parking area or
trailhead. Turn off Highway 40 to parking area as per additional
waypoint. Park in the grassy field on the northeast side of the
highway. There are no outhouse facilities at this location.
Walk along the edge of the forest to look for the unmarked trail
heading into the trees. Trailhead is about 30 meters south of the
creek.
The route to the cache consists of 3 sections. The first section
meanders upwards through trees and is easy to moderate. There are
several fallen trees across the trail, but you can either climb
over or go around.
About 0.7 km from the trailhead you will come to a creek, which
marks the start of the second section of the route – an easy, flat
hike across a meadow. Do not cross the creek. Turn right and follow
the faint trail up through the meadow towards the foot of the rock
fall. This meadow is absolutely gorgeous with wildflowers for most
of July and into August and is a key reason this makes our list of
favourite hikes.
Once you cross the meadow, you will start into the third section
of the route, which requires some scrambling over boulders and some
scree with a steeper climb – this section is for seasoned hikers
only. Follow the creek as you start to work your way along the
perimeter of the rock fall, continuing past the little waterfall
and some huge, squarish boulders. The easiest route to the cache is
not directly up. Continue up the edge of the rock fall and then
backtrack to gain elevation by making your way along the steep,
grassy benches. If you take the direct route, you’ll end up
climbing up a mixed dirt and scree incline.
GPSR was showing cache location to within 4 meters. Cache
container is a 2 litre lock ’n’ lock covered in “camo” tape. Please
rehide cache carefully so that it’s not visible to muggles.
Original cache contents include a nice selection of
geocaching/hiking/camping swag (please stick to similar goods for
trading), plus an FTF card and geocaching.com lanyard for the First
to Find.
Return hike should be less than 4 km. If you want a longer
outing, you could combine this cache with a visit to Ptarmigan
Treasure (GCPXF3), trailhead just a few kilometers north along
Highway 40.
Aug 10 - Another new cache in the area, thanks to graylling.
Check out GCXJ4C. Aug 14 - downgraded terrain rating from 3.5,
