Geocache Description:

This 10L cache is located just off the Silverpeaks Route north west of Dunedin.

There are multiple access ways to this cache. The easiest and the way I suggest is to park at the 2nd Semple Road carpark. Access this from the first left turn past the old service station in Waitati.

If you wish a overnight trip can be made by walking down the aptly named Devil's Staircase just after the cache location - beware the route down Devils Staircase is incredibly steep and may be hard to follow in places plus it is a devil of a climb back out. Whilst down there try to find the Bear Safe cache by Eli_The_Moose.

The actual cache location is the highest point in the Silverpeaks.

The first carpark along Semple Road will get you to the cache but is slightly longer route over skirting Hightop. Other alternate access ways are: Following Powder creek up to Long Ridge from the Whare Flat carpark; via the Rosella Ridge from Possum Hut further down Semple Road (it maybe Mountain Track by this access point); across from Swampy Summit.

Walking times to this cache can vary between two hours if your fit and much longer if your out on a leisurely stroll.

The cache is a 10L paint pail, camo painted and hidden under a large rock outcrop. Please be careful as approaching the rock outcrop from the wrong angle may result in serious fall - either side will take you to the cache and it is hidden under some scrub. When placed the cache contained along with a logbook, pencils and pencil sharper; a fishing clock, a ready painted small geocache container, a glassons bag and various other trades.

This would be an ideal cache for overnight tramp in the Silverpeaks.

The Silverpeaks is one of Dunedins iconic conservation reserves. It gained its infamy after three boys died of Hypothermia in the 1970s in a freak snow storm.

*** WARNING ***
The Silverpeaks reserve is known for its extreme weather conditions. Heavy fog can roll in on a sunny day with no clouds in the sky in as little as 15 minutes.

Appropriate precautions need to be taken when entering this reserve.
* Always consult the appropriate Topo map (I44 Dunedin is the one you need [only sold in Dunedin from Whitcoulls/Bivouac Outdoors [recommended]/DOC Office])
* Take adequate warm clothing (even on hot days), food and water (sunny days can dehydrate you incredibly fast and the tops have no water sources at all).
* Always tell someone where you are going and estimated time of arrival home.
