Geocache Description:

A visit to a remote corner of Horse Hill Preserve.

This cache is inspired by Shakespeare's history King Henry V. A synopsis of the play as well as the full text can be found here. One of my favorite film adaptations of a Shakespeare play is this production directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh.

I've driven by this area many times, but never noticed a trail head before - it's fairly new. I also never realized that this area was part of the Horse Hill Preserve. As I started out on this trail, I noticed a big pile of boulders right by the trail head. This pile of boulders reminded me of the breach in the castle wall that Henry V urged his soldiers through during a pivotal battle in the play.

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;"
(Act III, Scene I)

Like all my other Shakespeare caches, you do not have to read the play to find the cache.

The Area

This cache is in a remote corner of Horse Hill Preserve. I hadn't known about this "back way" into the area until I stumbled across it while doing some nearby caches. Across Naticook Road, the trail continues on to the parking lot at Wasserman Park. If you were to hike along this part of the trail, you'd pass a large outcropping of granite. This outcropping was the source of stones used in the foundation of many houses built in the area back in the 18th century.

Please Note

  • The cache is a medium sized lock & lock.
  • The beginning of the trail is an easement through private property. Please stay on the trail until the trail crosses a stone wall.
  • Like Henry V's soldiers, you may have to deal with archers. If you go any further along the trail or if you bushwhack further than the cache, you will be approaching an old archery range. The range is still used occasionally. There are signs on the trails when it is in use. The cache is about 100' from the edge of the range and is not in a firing line. If you hear activity near ground zero, you may want to make your presence known.
  • The range will be in use on the following dates.
    • July 19-20, 2008
    • August 23-24, 2008
  • This cache was released at Bread & Roses 5 (GC137HT).
