Geocache Description:

According to the Georgian chronicles, King Asparug founded Ujarma-City fortress in the 3rd century AD. This city, with its increasing economic and strategic importance, was the political centre of Kakheti in the 4th century. Here was built one of the earliest Crosses in the newly converted country.

In the second half of the 5th century, during the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasili, Ujarma became a royal city with a complex defence system as well as manufacturing and trade quarters. King Vakhtang made the city a stronghold in battles against the Persians. While fighting a Persian invading army, he was fatally wounded and died in Ujarma.

The City fortress consists of upper and lower fortresses and was strengthened with rectangular towers. In the upper fortresses stood the small Holly Cross church and the royal palace, a three-story tower with wine cellar, vault and jail. The second and third floors of the fortress were used as residence for the guards.

Ujarma-City fortress was destroyed by the Arabs in the 10th century and then rebuilt by King Georges III in the 12th century. In the following centuries, Ujarma lost its strategic importance.

The cache: climb to the fortress where you will find a plan/map of the old city. Don't forget to enjoy the place and the view! Check the plan/map: the cache can be found at the bottom of the tower situated to the right of the main entrance (when standing on the outside).

PS: the cache does not contain a pencil (as I forgot to take one with me when I placed it… ;-) ) so please take one along with you!
