Geocache Description:

Snowbird, aka The "yardstick" will test your skills as well as your fortitude as you explore some of the wildest country in the region. This cache is strictly for those adept in outdoor skills.

Welcome to Snowbird! This cache is not for the weak of heart rather it is for the bold of spirit. Snowbird will be the cache in which you will compare all others and will place you in the upper ranks of the caching world. If you are comfortable with your outdoor skills and are self reliant then read on.

This cache highlights one of the most beautiful areas in the Southeast. The Snowbird backcountry lies in the Snowbird creek basin in the convergence of the Snowbird and Unicoi mountain ranges. This area was one of the last hideouts for the Cherokees during the indian removal. They estimate that there are 300 distinct Cherokee family lines still in the Robinsville area due to these brave people that resisted the removal and hid in this area. How could they not have found this group of people? You will see.

As for the cache it encompasses four stages, each highlighting very unique points of interest.

Please heed our recommendations.

1: Make sure to have a good map! Do not rely on your base map! The forest service has stopped maintaining the area, and the trails are not well marked.

2: Take a compass. Know how to use it.

3: Take plenty of water and snacks.

4: Let someone know where you are going.

5: Be in good physical condition....The shortest route of completion (that we know of) is 11.3 miles. If you are sketchy at back country navigation it could be longer.

6: Get an early start.

Remember: It is you that makes the choice to do this cache. You may run into hazards that we have not listed. It is your responsibility to be prepared.

Ok, enough with the scary stuff. If you decide to do this cache you will be greatly rewarded. If you are bold of spirit and complete the quest then you will have truly "Measured up".

Park here : N 35 15.862 W 83 56.290

Take the trail to the left behind the forest service board.

FTF will be rewarded with a Vivitar digital camera! (Remember to take the CD as well, this has the software to download the pictures). The cache is loaded with high-end prizes..(Maglights, compasses, etc) please trade accordingly.

Good luck!

Note: As of 24 April 2008 there is a fourth stage to the cache. It is located between stage one and stage two, hence it is dubbed stage 1.5. Witty huh? This was placed to help folks get from stage one to stage two. Hint: It is located at the base of a tree right off the trail on the up-hill side.
