This cache is one of a series of caches hidden along the "fire
road" on top of Cacapon Mountain in the beautiful Cacapon Resort
State Park. This scenic state park is located just off of Route 522
in WV, not very far north of Winchester, VA.
When you enter the park, just follow the signs to the Mountain
Overlook. The parking lot/overlook coordinates are N 39 28.243 W
078 20.646. The road to the overlook starts out paved and turns to
gravel for about 4 miles to get you to the top. For trucks and
Jeeps, this will be a breeze, but any car that doesn’t have a
very low clearance shouldn’t have any trouble as the road is
maintained pretty well. While the road to the top is closed from
October to March, as far as we can tell the trails remain open year
round. There is a 5 mile loop that will get you to the top if
you’re up for a hiking challenge. The normal park hours are 6
AM till dark.
Visit www.cacaponresort.com for detailed park
information.
The cache is placed off the gated fire road heading to the north
of the overlook. The gate is at N 39 28.266 W 078 20.626. The idea
is to enjoy the walk and only bushwhack when necessary. There is
very little undergrowth here so it's not really even bushwhacking.
Our coords have this cache at 2 miles from the parking lot.
Please Note: We recommend NOT taking the frontal assault path to
this cache. As you approach it, your GPSr will tell you to bear off
and head up through some rock outcroppings. Follow the trail where
it cuts to the left a bit, then back to the right and up the hill.
After you get up the hill so far, the terrain becomes much less
rocky and you can walk the ridge back towards the cache. We have
added a waypoint of the spot we prefer.
Please pay attention to your surroundings. These rocks are home
to some creatures you do NOT want to not blunder into. Walking
sticks are useful items for poking into places you wouldn't want to
put your hands into. Please be careful...
The cache itself is a medium sized ammo can, initially
containing some geocaching buttons, lock, a WG$, playing cards, and
other assorted trade items, as well as a log book and pencil.
Enjoy.
