The Road Safety Instruction Centre was officially declared open in September 1980 by Mr. E.W. Hender, Chairman of the Road Safety Council of SA. It was intended that the centre be used by children from schools within 80kms of Jamestown.
The Centre had been established by the former Jamestown Corporation in conjunction with the Lions Club. The need for an instruction centre in the area was suggested by Mr. Hender to the Town Clerk Mr. Max Prior in March 1978. The Corporation immediately offered their support by making available an area of parklands adjacent to the Primary School for the establishment of the centre. (This building is now home to the Jamestown Local History Centre since the amalgamation of the Primary & High Schools in 2000).
The Lions Club resolved to support the project and the club member’s in-put of over 400 man-hours greatly assisted the construction. The Club had spent over $500 at the centre which included purchase of the storage shed and concrete for the floor, the wiring for lights and the 15 bicycles and 14 tricycles.
The Jamestown Corporation had been responsible for the construction of the Centre’s roadways and paid for the wiring and fittings for the control box and the cyclone fence.
This centre has since been closed and most of the facility removed.
