Purdue Wildlife Practicum Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pokagon Nature Center: Thanks to Bucket Brigade for doing a check on the cache for us. After three DNFs, it does appear to be missing. We'll be archiving this one. It was fun while it lasted!

Thanks

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Purdue Wildlife Practicum. This cache is not an easy cache, but well worth it in it's location and cache reward!

Every summer, 100 Purdue wildlife and forestry students head to their wildlife practicum. 6 weeks in the UP of Michigan with intensive courses in navigation, wildlife techniques, forestry techniques and the joy of the wilderness.

The capstone to the first week is the find the flag contest. Each student is given a map with a hole in it. The goal is to figure out the scale, and given the location they will be dropped off at, they must find the bearing and number of paces to the location, find the flag, ID the tree it's on, then repeat this for 7 more flags through forests, cedar swamps, fields, wet meadows, etc... to win. The record is 3.5 hours, but many are pulled out of the wilderness after 9 or 10 hours lost!

The cache is not at the above location, but at the point on the map above. It is within 5 miles of the posted coords. You must either figure out the coordinates on the map or navigate your way with the map segment you have.

The original container is easy to find, an ammo can measuring nearly 2 feet long and 18 inches tall. There is lots for the first to find to pick from, so please bring something nice to trade! Original contents included: 2 brand new fleece jackets (tags still on them), unactivated IDNR Geocoin, TFTC Geocoin, hunting vests, rain ponchos, Dairy Queen Gift Certificates, full size flashlight, book light, fishing lures, bags of hand warmers, and other outdoor items.

This cache was placed as an original geocaching adventure. What geocaching is supposed to be. There are several mediocre cemetery miros within distance of here if you'd rather find them. Email me if you need any help. Good luck!
