RTT Pendleton Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Inkwell: We went for a walk on the RTT this morning to check on the cache. When we placed it 5 years ago, this entire section of the trail was gravel; now it's a nicely paved bike trail. Once we got to GZ, we searched around for a bit before locating the cache. It looks like the caches original hiding spot (the hollowed out base of a standing tree) is long gone. The cache contents were indeed soaked and there was no sign of the geocoin that was dropped here in March 2009. With 68 finds over 5 years, this one has run its course. Thanks to all who took the time to find it.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a forest alongside a Rails-to-Trails project in the town of Pendleton, NY. According to the town website, a generous grant was recently secured for this project. This money will be used to convert a 1.5 mile section of the old railway bed to a recreation trail beginning on Campbell Blvd. to Mapleton Rd. This will be a continuation of the existing trail located between Meyer Rd. and Campbell Blvd (where you can find Spawn of Multiplicity # 5, by Urkel).

Parking for this cache is available on Feigle Rd., in Pendleton. You can park near N43.06.756/W078.45.935 or across the road near N43.06.750/W078.45.947. If you choose to park across the road, please be careful when crossing. Also, please note that there is only space for about 1-2 cars in each parking area.

Be prepared for a healthy walk and a dose of bushwhacking. If you take a direct path to the cache following your GPS, you may end up with wet feet. So be prepared. If you're looking for an easier entry into the forest, I recommend continuing up the trail until you see an ATV trail branching off on your right. Take this trail for 50-100 ft' and then start your journey into the woods.

The forest opens up rather quickly once you're inside. There are a few deer trails here and there, but other than that, you're on your own. I can tell that these woods will get a bit soupy in the wet months or after a heavy rain, so please take note. As with most wilderness caches in these parts, I saw a few bugs, frogs, snakes, some thorns, and a wee bit of poison ivy while placing the cache. Keep an eye out! Boots and long pants are suggested.

You'll be looking for a camo'd rubbermaid container. It's well-hidden, but in an obvious spot. Good luck and happy caching! Aren't Rails-to-Trails awesome?
