RAF Castle Camps was active from 1939 to 1946, at first it was
used as a fighter base for Hurricanes, but later in the war it
gained a reputation as a base for night fighters, most famously
being used as a gathering point for "Cat's Eyes Cunningham" and his
hand picked squadron of night fighters. After the war the airfield
was sectioned up and sold to local farmers, they took down the
buildings and removed most of the runways, a section of runway
remains, as does the perimeter track, you can see them on this
photograph:
The cache is hidden on the main road which runs beside the
perimeter of the airfield.
While you're here take a look at the parish church here:
N52,03.4573 E000,22.2554 the churches stained glass window has had
it's centre flur de lys cut away, if you look where it was you'll
see the badge of the squadron that flew from here has been inserted
into the window. If you go for a stroll through the gate in the
churchyard at the rear of the church and then along the road you'll
be beside a high wall which contains a large farmhouse, this is the
site of the old Castle that gives the village it's name, look to
your left as you leave the church, the water you can see is the
remains of the upper moat. The lower moat is now the overflow
graveyard in the churchyard.
If you fancy taking in some more original WW2 sites a short drive
to "Camps End" here N52,02.9210 E000,21.4174 will show you some
Nissan nuts, nicknamed the "Waffery" by the pilots these were the
former home to the base's contingent of "WAAF's".
The cache is a std. Ammo box.
The cache used to hang on a hook under a wooden stile, but
recently they removed the stiles so I relocated the cache close to
the modern marker for the airfield, the cache is much easier to
find, but the area is still interesting to visit.
