From the Clovelly Road bend, it’s a climb of over 300 metres,
requiring say 3 to 4 hours there and back. Alternative routes from
Boyes Drive (Remember the Amphitheatre and Echo Valley?) or even
from the Godfrey Road end (Remember Arrowhead Crest and the Hiker’s
Expressway?)
Ahoy Shipmates! Its Navy Festival Week. So, wakey, wakey, rise and
shine! Cooks to the galley! If the weather’s fine and you’ve got
the time, why not clamber the rigging to visit the Crow’s Nest. At
the given location (when no land-lubber is watching) face the
Tiddly Ship’s Side. (The captain looks on it with pride).Stand
tip-toe and peep through the Porthole before you. Bearing about
“Six-O”. You will see an imaginary spot X on the far bulkhead of
the Crow’s Nest. Note the position. Go around to X. No, its not the
Plimsoll Line, this one drops vertically down to deck level. Move
nearly 2 metres left to the bunker opening of Davy Jones’ Locker.
The cache is deep inside the Locker. Blistering Barnacles! - You
will have to get down on your belly right to the Golden Rivet level
and crawl through or be keelhauled. (Or you can cheat and go around
the north side of the superstructure). Find the cache in the Locker
at eye-level behind some stones. If you have the inclination,
scramble up the Mizzen Top Gallant to the comfortable Crow’s Nest
itself. You will find it ideal for a break and a cup of tea. If the
sun is over the yardarm you may wish to splice the Mainbrace and
indulge yourself in a ration of Grog. Yoho Hum and Thundering
Typhoons!
