Geocache Description:

I thought this town could use another cache. But instead of just placing one in a random spot for no reason, I chose to place it in this park and give everybody a little history lesson at the same time. Please take the time to read the description and look at the pictures below. You just might learn something! I'll add a hint after the FTF.

This cache is located near where the original bridge used to cross the river between South River and Sayreville. That bridge has long since been replaced by the much larger one you currently see, but if you look closely you can still see signs and remnants of the original one. If you follow the curve of the existing roadway that approaches the cul de sac, you can trace the route the old bridge took. As you approach the water, look closely for signs of the curbs and sidewalks that used to be part of it. Look to your right and you can see the remnants of the base of the metal street light that was at the foot of the bridge. There were two on each end of the bridge, but out of the four this is the only one that partially remains. If you look across the river you will be able to tell where the old bridge spanned the river and connected on the Sayreville side. The orange line in the picture is approximately where the old bridge stood. The Causeway that leads up to the cul de sac was the "main drag" into South River back in the day. You can see the diners that used to be still standing but abandoned due to the decline of passing traffic once the new bridge was constructed. Second picture below is of the original bridge.
