Handmade ceramic tiles featuring twenty-seven hand-written stories
from the local community form a border along the edge of the
foreshore and canal pathway.
Twenty-seven Stories marks a section of the Gecko Natural
History Trail described in Meyer Eidelson's Walks in Port Phillip. The
work has a social history focus and contrasts stories about the
past with those of the present.
The stories document attitudes and experiences of life in
Elwood, exploring contrasts between the natural environment and the
built environment, Indigenous and European settlement, and the good
old days and the bad old days.
The Cache Series
THE FUN AND EXCITING CACHING
ACTIVITY
For those participating in the Fun and Exciting Caching
Activity, you can complete the cache for the caching event by only
having to find points A to J in the list below.
Each point is not so much a waypoint, but more an observation
along the path, and these points stretch only a total of around
500m along the path.
However to save yourself a trip later, feel free to wander the
rest of the way along the canal so you can complete the other 5
caches as they appear over time. |
The trail is outlined on Page 19 of the Walks booklet. There are several places you
can park, with the loop for the cache being around a 3km walk
that will take between 70 - 100 minutes. Alternatively you can
do the cache in stages.
To help you not to miss any of the stories (sometimes they may
be covered up by sand or the lawn edges), there are some
breakpoints in the list so you can check you're in the right place.
This will also let you consider doing the cache in stages for those
with less than an hour to walk the length of the canal. The track
and the locations of the tiles changes sides of the canal and sides
of the path from time to time, but all should be reasonably easily
found.
To find the values for each of the points you will need to find
each of the 27 stories, and match up one of the options with the a
word found in the story. Some of the sets of options are all words
that fit into the context of the particular story. Others bear no
relation to the story, and you just need to find which one of the
words matches one found in the story. Print out the table below (or
download the
spreadsheet) and write the values in as you go along.
