The Wenatchee area mountains have an abundance of sandstone formations. No two are alike. The hills are full of them and they all have their own unique shape. Sandstone formations are created by erosion from the wind, rain, and snow melt. They come in the form of columns, spires, slabs, large round or egg shaped boulders, arches, caves, and other odd shapes. One of the most popular sandstone formations in the area are The Peshastin Pinnacles near Cashmere. These unique sandstone formations were created when geological forces pushed an ancient sea floor up out of the ground.
At the cache site you will find sandstone boulders which appear ready to roll, balanced rocks, and other odd formations. When driving back down the canyon toward Wenatchee, look up on the hillsides and you will see more interesting sandstone formations.
