A small town with a large history!
Please park here: N47 06.121 W 122 02.425
Wilkeson is a small town that is rich in history. When arriving to this town you will pass graveyards filled with pioneers and hard working coal miners. You will pass under a stone arch that collapsed during our earthquake from a few years ago and was rebuilt. You will also pass a large section of a tree that is on display to commemerate the towns logging history.
Just before reaching the designated parking area you will pass a beatiful old Elementry School. This school is on the registrar of historic places but it is still in use to this day as a school.
Once at the parking location you will see a number of odd looking little caves built into a man made hill side. There are the coke ovens that are part of the rich coal mining history of this town. You will also see a couple of railroad hand cars and some railway track. This is the location of the yearly railroad handcar race that is held every July in Wilkeson. This too is a tribute to the historical past of this town.
You will also find a Mt. Rainier ranger station in this town. It is located in a train caboose in the center of town.
Take you time to enjoy this unique town and the history it has to offer.
