Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache based at the location of the village of Balsdean, east of Brighton.

Large areas of the South Downs were used for military exercises during the war and the village of Balsdean was one of the casualties. Evacuated and used for target practise, there is little sign today except for some interesting lumps and bumps.

A quick Google for ‘Balsdean’ will reveal some more interesting information, such as:
(visit link)
"1825 a licensed house established at Balsdean, Rottingdean
Patients moved to Ringmer 1829"
This explains a note that I came across a while ago that revealed the upper storey of the farm house was seen to be fitted out as a padded room.

This area is now open access land except the field to the west, so please avoid this.

The best parking is at N 50° 50.454 W 0° 04.461, although you can save a little by parking on street nearby. It is about 1.3 miles from the car park to the main location.

Wherever you park, make for N 50° 50.459 W 0° 04.002 where you must take the path through the gate.

Follow this path to N 50° 50.312 W 0° 02.871 when you must descend to the stile at N 50° 50.337 W 0° 02.729. This is the steep section that earns the difficulty rating!

Make your way to the east of the roofless barns from where the way is clear to the main co-ordinates.

Use the information you find here to locate the cache at:

N 50° 50.ABC W 000° 02.DEF

Where:
A = number of Q’s
B = number of punctuation marks
C = number of lines
D = number of T’s
E = number of letters in the third word
F = number of letters in the eleventh word

You should get a location within 600 feet.
