Le Pic d'Estats, 3143m, sur la frontière franco-espagnole, est le plus sommet des Pyrénées ariégeoises et de la Catalogne sud.
Estats Peak, 3143m, on the France-Spain border, is the highest summit of Pyrénées of Ariège and of the south Catalonia.

Le Pic d’Estats est le point culminant des Pyrénées ariégeoises, c’est également le plus haut sommet de la Catalogne et les excursionnistes catalans lui rendent régulièrement un vibrant hommage avec des drapeaux, des oriflammes aux couleurs de la Généralité.
Cette randonnée est réservée aux personnes habituées à la montagne, équipées de bonnes chaussures et de vêtements chauds, en bonne forme physique. A faire l’été, par temps dégagé. Ne jamais s’aventurer en altitude par temps incertain. L’accès par le versant nord, côté français, se fait par Tarascon-sur-Ariège, puis Vicdessos, puis Auzat. Suivre la direction de l’Artigue et s’arrêter en bout de route au parking (1200m) qui jouxte la centrale EDF. Prendre le sentier qui conduit au très beau refuge du CAF de l’Etang de Pinet (2224m, compter 2h30 à 3h selon votre charge et votre entraînement), position GPS 42°41’28’’ N, 001°23’48’’ E. Faire une halte au refuge et profiter de l’accueil chaleureux de l’équipe. Autre option : à partir du lieu dit Orris de Plan Nouzere, à 1690m, en sortant de la hêtraie, prendre à gauche le chemin vers l’étang Sourd et continuer ensuite jusqu’au refuge du Pinet. A partir du refuge prendre le sentier, bien marqué et régulier, qui monte au col de Riufret (« torrent froid ») à 2978m, compter 3h, position GPS 42°40’15’’ N, 001°24’08’’ E. Très belles vues sur les sommets et sur les étangs d’Estats et du Montcalm et sur le versant sud. Une fois sur le col prendre à droite, suivre le chemin vers le plus haut des sommets que l’on aperçoit. 20 minutes plus tard on arrive au sommet du Pic d’Estats, position GPS 42°40'01,14''N, 001°23'52,56''E, qui marque la frontière entre la France et l’Espagne (et avec la Catalogne sud). Présence d’une très grande croix métallique où flottent des drapeaux catalans.
La cache se trouve à 1,5 m de la croix dans une excavation carrée profonde de 1, 5m qui comporte une plaque commémorant le centenaire de l’ascension de Verdaguer au Pic. La cache se trouve dans une anfractuosité près de la plaque. Contenu : quelques jouets (sifflet, flûte, scoubidou, billes, ballons), le log book, un stylo, un mini dossier cartographique (extraits de cartes anciennes et de cartes topographiques récentes).

Estats Peak, 3143m
This peak is the highest of Pyrenees of Ariege, and also the highest summit of south Catalonia. Catalans trekkers and walkers like to climb on it and to decorate the ultimate point with flags and streamers representing the colours of the Generality.
This trek is only for people accustomed to mountain walking, having good shoes and warm clothes, en good physical shape. To be done in summer, only with sunny weather conditions. Never go in altitude when weather is changing. The access from the North, on French side, is by Tarascon-sur-Ariège, Vicdessos, then Auzat. Follow the direction of l’Artigue and stop at the end of the road on a carpark (1200m) close to the EDF power station. Follow the path leading to the very nice CAF refuge called Refuge of Pinet Pound (2224m, at about 2:30 or 3:00 time according to your load and training), GPS position : 42°41’28’’ N, 001°23’48’’ E. Stop and rest a while to benefit from the warm welcome of the refuge attendants. Another option: from the place called “Orris de Plan Nouzere, at 1690m, just after the beech forest, take on the left the path to Etang Sourd (Deaf Pound) and then go to the refuge of Pinet Pound. From the refuge take the path (clearly visible ad regular) that leads to Riufret (“cold torrent”) Pass at 2978m, at about 3:00 time, GPS position 42°40’15’’ N, 001°24’08’’ E.
Very nice mountain view on the summits and pounds (Estats and Montcalm pounds), and on the southern side. Once at the Pass, take on the right towards the highest peak. 20 minutes later arrival on the summit of Pic d’Estats, GPS position 42°40'01,14''N, 001°23'52,56''E, that outlines the border between France and Spain (and with south Catalonia). You will observe a large cross with Catalans flags floating in the wind.
The cache is located at 1,5m from the cross in a squared excavation in the rock at 1,5m depth with a plate commemorating the centenary of the rise of the peak. The cache is hidden in a rocky slit close to the plate. The box contains some toys: a whistle, a flute, a scoubidou, balls, the log book, a pen, a small cartographic folder with extracts of old maps and current topographical maps.
