A brief history of the gum wall:

The gum wall began in the 1990's when patrons of the Market Theater used the blobs to affix coins to the wall outside the box office. When the coins were inevitably taken (ew) the ritual morphed into simply affixing gum to the wall, sometimes in patterns or messages.

More than a ton of gum was removed from the wall when it was cleaned on November 10th (to prevent erosion from the sugar in the gum). Market officials fully expect more gum to be placed, however, so let's chip in :D
