California's Pioneer Oil Town ~ Established 1876
The cache is in the general area of oil well #4.

-------------------------------------

The Santa Clarita Historical Society has an interesting article on the history of Mentryville on their web site. (visit link)

For your information, the Pico No. 4 oil well is listed on the register of National Historic Landmarks. It not only was the first commerically successful oil well in the western United States, but No.4 was the longest, continually-operating oil well in the world. It was tapped in September 1876 and capped in September 1990.

Replaced the container today and it is the same kind. If you do come to Mentryville any time soon you will have to park outside about .25 mile away from downtown Mentryville. Also, once you pass Johnson Park there are two areas that have been washed out but they are passable. I had 2 eight year olds and they had no problem. I did change the coordinates a tad since they seemed to be off about 25 feet.
