The town's name derives from "Kougai bashi"(Kougai bridge) existed near the town in the past.
The river and the bridge have already disappeared.

笄公園付近は、かつて存在した笄橋にちなんで麻布笄町と呼ばれていました。現在の西麻布二丁目、三丁目、四丁目にかかる広い地域です。「笄橋」の由来については諸説ありますが、天慶の乱（939年）のとき、関所に阻まれた源義基が帯びていた刀の笄（刀の鞘の差表にさしておくヘラ状のもの）を与えて川を渡ったという説や、江戸幕府が開かれた際にこの周辺に、甲賀組、伊賀組の屋敷があったことから「甲賀伊賀橋」の名残などの説があります。
