Geocache Description:

Chearsley is the setting for this cache which will take you on a tour of the local scenery. Follow the winding 'Thames Valley Path' for stunning views & local history, passing by the once ruined but now restored, Notley Abbey along the way. Please take a print out as you will need various parts of this page to help you complete the coords! Please also note that out of summer months the terrain here could rise to 4.5

This cache is a single parter but some extra digits must be picked up at 2 other spots during your walk. The map to the left shows the local area with the 'Thames Valley Walk' Cleary marked in green. You will need to follow this trail until you reach Notley Farm at which point directions are up to you. There are many footpaths in the area & finding the final location without straying onto private land is not difficult. The coords above are a suggested parking place. Here you will find yourself adjacent to St.Nicholas church, now follow the pointers to find your goals...

1) Make your way into the church yard & use these coordinates: N51°47.209 W000°57.441. Now look around & locate the resting place of 'Eileen Nora Taylor'. Make a note of the date she died which is ABth June 19C3

After completing the first task, exit the graveyard and turn left, walking past the village pond/well until the road breaks into 2 with a road branching off to the right. On your left up a slope should be a stile where a footpath begins. You will be following the path directly accross the field ahead. Over the next stile and straight on again! Please stick to this trail as aswell as supplying superb views as far as Whiteleaf cross on the distant hillside, it will take you straight to the next clue.

2) After a short & easy stroll your walk will be halted at a rail crossing. You can see for miles in either direction and it is a good photo oppertunity. Ofcourse, please take care here as the track is in use. Whilst taking in the views you are sure to notice a bright yellow sign with a 2 digit number on it. Add these 2 digits together to make 'D'

You can now complete the final coords which are as follows...
N5A°D6.BAB W000°5(C-1).A5B

a

Leave the railway behind you & continue your treck along the path until finaly you reach Notley farm. On your left is Notley Abbey Dovecoat which was used as a pigeon house. Here is the only part of the trail where footpaths may decieve you as they are slightly hidden by fencing. Once in the farm grounds, make sure to enter the car park of Notley 'tythe barn' as this is where the footpath to the Abbey runs.

On the otherside of the gates you will find a stile & will in seconds later, be in full view of Notley Abbey which is now restored to its full beauty. From here finding the cache is down to you, but feel free to use the clue as without it you may find things difficult. You may also be in for a suprise We hope you enjoy this lovely little bit of history and countryside. Please take some photos along the way & especially of yourself at the cache site. Please make sure to wear trousers as the final location is home to some nettles.

Have fun with this one!!, Dan.
