Geocache Description:

What the heck is a Mt. Ogden? At Warren’s Drive-In it’s a high stack hamburger with patty, deli ham, and Swiss cheese; at Farr’s Ice Cream it’s an humongous ice cream cone with five or six scoops shaped like the peak; for Stockley_true and WeatherGuy it’s an anchor in the sky east of Ogden, our hometown.

Mt. Ogden (9,572 ft.) is the dominant peak in the eastern skyline of Junction City. It can be approached from several directions. One can hike southwest through Snowbasin to the saddle then north to the peak (about 5 miles); one can start at the Beus Canyon trailhead at the top of 46th Street (in Ogden) and follow a 6.5 mile trail to the summit; or one can start at the Malan’s Basin trailhead at the top of 29th Street following the trail up Taylor’s Canyon, then past Malan’s Peak to Malan’s Basin, then east up the drainage to the peak. Other approaches exist for the more adventurous. Consult topo maps, local trail guides, etc. The hike from Snowbasin is the most dramatic as the 1,000+ ft. east cliff face of the peak is often in view and you approach the base of the face during the hike.

The west side trails are 7+ hours round trip and begin at roughly 5,100 ft. elevation and a terrain difficulity of 3.5 to 4.5 while the Snowbasin hike is about 5 hours round trip starting at about 6,300 ft. in the main parking lot with a terrain difficulity of 3. Follow the dirt road south of the main complex east to the Becker Lift House where it turns south. You can follow this road to the summit. Coordinates used for the peak are N41°11.996, W111°52.923 and N41°11.830, W111°52.987 for the saddle. As of this posting more than 26 geocaches exist within a 3 mile radius from the peak. North of the peak is Mountain Snowberry Cache (GC167A) and west of the peak in Malan’s Basin is another cache (GCFFB).

A standard sized ammo can holds the cache. Please hide the cache as you found it since it is near a high traffic area. If necessary make repairs to its “house.” (Note: this cache was actually placed 10/25/02.)

Original cache contents include:
· (Notebook, pencils, sharpener, PAB Coin Card, and
thermometer stay in cache)
· Chapstick

After you find the cache and “bag” the peak head to Huntsville and order up a Star Burger at the Shooting Star Saloon, the oldest continuously operated saloon in Utah. You don’t have to imbibe to enjoy the burgers and the St. Barnard head mounted above a booth. Or on the west side of the mountain soak your feet in the WSU duck pond or Ogden River and enjoy dinner at one of Ogden’s many eateries. Or go out to Jeremiah’s Restaurant on west 12th Street where your hike may be immortalized on the table placemats.

Remember, just as the world was welcomed in Utah for the 2002 Winter Olympics, geocachers are always welcomed here at this anchor in the sky.
