Utorthent Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

gpsfun: The SC DNR has changed their policy and has requested all caches in Heritage Preserves to be archived.

It is my understanding that they are physically removing them now.

HydrogenMan, please contact me through my profile and I will put you in touch with someone who may be able to assist in returning the physical cache container to you.

Thank you.

Geocache Description:

The cache is a typical ammo can along a cleared trail. There are multiple trails, and a large pond so come and explore.

This cache is a companion to Sand Hills (GC11C2X ). The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recently opened the southern section of the Henderson Heritage Preserve, with many trails and some unusual geologic features. This area is astoundingly different from that of the northern area which is composed of recent growth pines and recent controlled burns eliminating much of the lower tier growth. The southern section has many more mature pine, Mountain Laurels and dense undergrowth.
Striking features of this area are the Utorthents. These are eroded sand-clay formations reminiscent of western geologic formations, but much smaller in scale. The hunt for this cache will bring you in close proximity to one of these formations. Please do not climb on it, for it is extremely fragile and walking or climbing on it will destroy its untouched beauty. The cache is just a short walk off of one of the trails and no climbing is required. If you bring little ones, keep an eye on them so they don’t wander off and get into trouble. There is another larger utorthent not far from the cache site. Wander the trails and you may come upon it.
Heritage preserves are open for public use from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Parking is allowed only for preserve visitors and only in designated areas located at N33°35.746 W81°44.931.
